St John's Cathedral

The building is an architectural gem designed by Cassels in 1730.
Every Sunday a Service of Holy Communion is held at 8.30 am.  On the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sunday there is also Holy Communion at 10.30am. Morning Prayer Services are held at 10.30 on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

A special service of healing is held on the fifth Sunday of the month.
The most famous of these graves are of the poet W. B. Yeats' grandparents the Pollexfens whoare buried in the tomb pictured to the left. The brass plaque to the right commemorates his parents marriage in the church. There are 4 memorials to the Yeats family in the Cathedral.

There are many commemorative plaques in the church.  The one below was origionally  in Elphin Cathedral but was removed to Bishop Hodson's Grammar School in Elphin after that Cathedral was closed.  It was transferred to this Cathedral in Sligo in October 1998.
The picture below was painted by Capt. Percy Gethins in memory of his brother who was killed in the Boer War.

The Mortimer Chapel above is available for private prayer.

The church is acoustically very good and is a venue for concerts throughout the year.

In 2002 the Sexton's Hoouse was demolished and a new building was built in its place. The building named McGee House holds 4 office units and 2 accommodation units.
